Winston Chmielinski

There’s something child-like about Winston Chmielinski’s recent oil paintings. The beautiful blend of bright contrasting psychedelic colours and softer pastel colours look accidental on first glance. Upon investigation you can begin to see shapes appear, which after time, turn into figures and faces.

His repeated use of this fluorescent colour palette play a huge part in the masking of these gestural forms. They act as an abstract distraction, hiding the real subject in a fantastic, metaphysical, yet recognisable world. The combination of extemporaneous detail and watered down brush strokes emphasises the awkwardness and child-like innocence that these fascinating paintings portray. The organic dissolutions and reconstitutions of the figures mixed with very unnatural colours make these surreal images uniquely beautiful.
